Are you an Aussie Banksy?

Painters, street artists and muralists - fancy yourself the Australian Banksy? Brisbane artists are invited to submit expressions of interest to participate in a temporary public art project at the iconic Gasworks site. Up to 20 artists will be selected to produce site-responsive works on the hoardings, along the high-profile Newstead street front. Street-smart painterly interventions, depictions of the historical Gasometer structure and surrounds, or your brilliant vision of the future of this vibrant community will earn you the chance to make your mark.

An artist fee of $200+GST will apply for each panel (approx 1.7×2.4m). Artists must be available to complete the work during the month of November. To be considered for this opportunity, please submit up to three indicative images of your work and a brief paragraph describing your relevant experience and concept for the site, to Wendy at em@artworkers.org Please indicate whether you are proposing work for one or more panels. The closing date for expressions of interest is Wednesday 5 November 2008.

We need staff.

Please pass it on. Urban Grind is looking for a junior to do the cleaning after school and a coffee makers assistant. So if you know anyone please let them know to come in and see us. Thanks.

Help us Win

Last year Urban Grind was runner up to The 3 Monkeys for best coffee in Brisbane. This year we need your help to make sure that doesn’t happen again. It’s not that I don’t love The 3 Monkeys but I would rather we won that category. So if you do love your Urban Grind coffee please be kind enough to support us buy voting in the map village 2008/2009 Eat/Drink ‘best place’ awards.

We are actually nominated in 4 categories. Look for categories numbered 4, 7, 10 & 20. I guess we don’t have to win them all but it would be nice. Oh, and by entering you stand the chance to win something too. Click here to start voting now! Thanks heaps! Morgs.

I would love a Peapod

Like so many of these things we may never actually get the chance to purchase it, but I would love one of these. When are they going to realise that there is a market for these things and so many of us can’t wait. I love my little VW Golf Diesel but I would ditch it in a second for one of these Peapods, and not just because it has built in support for my iPhone.

SOfix is talking about us.

Just a quick note to let you know that we got a nice little write up on SOfix which is an online magazine about the goings on in Brisbane. You can read all about us here: Coffee with a conscience

I need to do something real.

Ok, so I was only going to post one of these but they are so well done. This is how you get peoples attention. Feeling really bad that I didn’t do the 40 Hour Famine. No doubt though that these ads played on main stream TV at popular time slots (tongue in cheek).

XDRTB

I am still looking into it but this is a very interesting issue that probably does need our attention. Extremely Drug Resistant TB. They are saying that it can be prevented. That is good news, but it still requires attention. For more back ground info on the site watch this TED Video: James Nachtwey: TED Prize wish: Share a vital story with the world.

Change to opening hours for Saturdays

Hey all, just a quick note to let you know that we will be closing at 1pm on Saturdays from now on. Um that is all for now unless you want to talk about this.

Can water run out?

This is a very interesting looking doco about the future of Water. It is said that one day we will be fighting wars over water. Man I hope it doesn’t come to that, it would be a real failing of our society. At Urban Grind I have always said, “Never deny anyone the opportunity to a glass of water or to use the toilet.” What goes around comes around and I might be real thirsty one day and having to rely on the kindness of my fellow man.

Galaga stays a little longer.

The guys at Arcade Tables have offered to leave the table for one more month and if you happen to purchase a table from them because of playing the one at Urban Grind they will donate $25 to our charity of choice. We choose Kiva. So if you have ever been curious to relive those fish and chip shop memories from your child hood you still have some time to try it out before it goes back.

Arcade Tables have been awesome to deal with. They are very professional and extremely helpful. It has been overall a great experience.
