Thanks to mecu we now have some green takeaway coffee cups. The cups are made from recycled paper and are 100% biodegradable. They are great to use, and the lids fit perfectly, no spills yet. At the moment it is just a temporary thing we are doing with mecu, but I am looking into getting our own cups made up asap. I have been looking for cups like this since I first opened Urban Grind. And before you get upset about advertising on your cup, mecu is a different bank. They give you better interest rates on home and car loans if you choose greener versions of such. So if you were thinking of buying a toyota prius, you might want to think about contacting mecu. Thanks also to the map village street editors for tipping us off on the cups, and to Zenstick Photography for the most excellent picture.

Are these cups available in New Zealand?
Hello Jane,
I could not answer that question for you, but I do know that the cups were produced by Visy Closed Loop. They might operate in NZ too. But ask heaps of questions about their claims. In the end I got the impression that the whole thing only worked if you were putting them in a bin provided by Visy and that they then too the bin away and recycled the cups themselves. I also could not get confirmation on how biodegradable the cups were. The coating inside the cups is the element in question.
I do feel now that the search for the true green coffee cup is still on. At least in Australia anyway. Please comment or contact me if you know any better.
Hi Morgan,
Just came across your article as was interested if you ever found a solution for your search of the true green cup?
Not yet and to be honest these days I am leaning more towards the fact that when it comes to paper cups or plastic water bottles it is not the products that need to change it is our consumption habits. Take time out and have a sit in coffee. Bring your own water bottle and re-use it. That kind of stuff.
