I had fun today! About F’ing time you say? I know, I know! It is true that I can be a bit all work and no play. So to over compensate for this I have hired a classic arcade table for the cafe. I could tell you a story about my childhood regression but I have a better short story about this other guy.
I had been warming up the machine for about 15mins when this guy sits down across the room, sees the machine and instantly asks “Is that space invaders?… I used to play that when I was 15, now I am 51!” I reply with “Yes, would you like a game on me?” He almost jumps up. We play 2 players in Space Invaders while he introduces me to some SI strategy. He plays really well, moving to the second stage on his first go. It was awesome fun and would have been a great way to meet someone had I remembered to ask him his name. Seriously, there is something cool about sitting down to play Space Invaders with a 50 year old man that is better at it than you.
We have practice tokens so that you can get back in the groove for chasing those high scores but for just $1 a game, you can choose from 48 authentic classics including Frogger, PacMan, Galaxian, Space Invaders, Galaga, Gyruss, Donkey Kong and more.
BRING THE KIDS
Urban Grind is child-friendly and so is the Asobu. Bring your little one/s in for a turn at Ladybug or Junior PacMan – that is, if the grown-ups can tear themselves away!
SCORE A FREE GAME!
Show off your high-score-beating prowess and we’ll shout you another game for FREE!
The arcade table is on a 4-week trial. If you’d like to see it stay, come in and give it a good workout.

Just a quick post to let you know how our ‘From the Tip Jar to Kiva’ efforts are going. So far we have lent $125US. You can see a very cool breakdown of who we have lent to what countries they are from and more. Getting involved in Kiva is very easy and I encourage you to do so too. At the moment we also have some jars of preserved lemons for $12(sml) and $17(lrg) with all proceeds going to Kiva.

I must remind you that all the staff at Urban Grind volunteer the tips money to this project. And thank you if you have ever thrown anything into our tip jar. It is a gesture that we appreciate.
We have been renting for years now, which does come with it’s usual complaints, but my complaints are never being able to establish a vege garden and not being able to explore things like Solar Power and Grey Water systems. One thing we have been able to do though is change to energy saving light bulbs.
And a few years back we made it a rule that when we move into a place we change all of the light bulbs to energy savers and leave them behind when we leave. Then we move into a place with no less than 40 incandescent light bulbs. Nearly 3 bulbs to each room. Crazy. We can cut the bill to one third just by taking two bulbs out of each room. But we are slowly putting one energy saver into each room and getting rid of all of the old school bulbs.
A few things. What does one do with the still working incandescent light bulbs? We are just going to store them as back ups. Do Not by the cheap bulbs. We bought some the first time around because we had so many rooms to change but they would flicker every 5 mins or so in the off position. And they glowed a bit. Maybe they were not saving energy.
To the landlords. Please install energy savers for your tenants. It will save them money. Things like this can be features of your properties. Oh and it is good for the environment. To the tenants. What you save on your energy bill will probably be spent on the initial changing of the bulbs, but maybe one day you will move into a new rental to find that the last tenants left energy savers for you.
I think I read something once about making every place that you have been a little better for you having been there.
