violence against women is not cool

Eve EnslerBut you knew that!

A minority of men are responsible for the problem.
A majority of men can stop it.

It means stand up for your women, gentlemen. Now the image to the left is an amazing talk by a stunning women. Just click on the image to watch it. I could try and review this little video, but I am not good at reviews. It is only about 20mins long. It is funny and sad, it is about vaginas and ultimately a video about happiness. I have not yet heard such a good talk about happiness.

Girls, please watch this video, it could only be empowering.
Gentlemen, watch it to be reminded of why it is important to speak out against violence to women. If not for the obvious reasons.

Ever wanted to design a car?

oscar projectWell now you can. One of the projects that my brother and I were going to do next year was set up a project where anyone could collaboratively design a car. It was of course going to be an environmentally friendly car, fully electric, etc, etc. Why? Well for me, because I didn’t think it was being done. But it is.

There is this very cool project called The OScar Project. That’s right there are 2 very cool Oscars. We won’t be getting involved because we were mainly interested in providing a framework that we thought had not been provided yet. But you could get involved, and in more ways than you think. Sure they need engineers, but there are many legal issues that need to be worked out too, and shear creative ideas never go astray. So if you ever drew a car as a little boy or girl and wished one day that you could design the car of the future, now, maybe you can.

The picture speaks for itself.

bus vs car
I am not sure what needs to happen but this picture reminds me that we do need to start thinking differently. For my part I try to use our car as little as possible, by living as close as I can to work (3 doors down), shopping locally, and walking instead of driving to the shops. This picture also makes me think about parking. Look at the space difference. What is our seeming obsession with occupying as much space as we can. Anyway, the image might raise some feelings for you so I posted it. It would be interesting to hear the thoughts of our children upon seeing such an image.

The Electric Car - The Holy Grail or Not?

electric carTill last week I thought that we didn’t have electric cars because the technology was hard or something like that. I thought that electric cars were still some holy grail idea the we just had not cracked yet. Alas, I am simply uninformed.

Thanks to map magazine we got to go and see ‘Who Killed the Electric Car’. I was entertained, amazed, inspired and shocked. There are no morally good reasons why we are not all driving fully electric cars. I recomend the Documentary. It is entertaining, but also reminds us that all of the puzzle pieces are there. It is just that no one wants to put them together to create a new world. See the trailer here.

Times are tough… Energex needs your help

I am no expert on this one. I only hope to start a discussion about it.

Help us get the jump on climate change

So reads the brochure I received in the mail last week. From $10-$50 you can save up to 4 months worth of environmental impact as caused by driving your car. Cool, even Energex gets that global warming is a real issue, and they have actually had this program in place for about 8 years. Good on you energex, but wait, if I choose the $50 option aren’t I increasing my bills by $200 a year?

Last year Energex reported an annual profit of about $636.6 million. Energex profits from dirty energy and instead of using that profit to it’s full extent (I acknowledge that they do see to have initiatives in place) they want us to pay for their good intentions. In short the maths doesn’t work in my head. It is like Energex is saying, “We have money that we could use, but we would rather use more of yours.”

What Energex could do:
Report a lesser profit next year. Take that income and show people that they really care about the issue. Surely an extra 500 million could have an impact. Think differently… why isn’t Energex putting renewable energy in place before we do as individuals. That way they could still control it, they could still charge us by the wattage, but this way instead of programs to get us to reduce our energy use they could in a sense encourage us to use as much as we like. Why not?…

ENERGEX - Go hard! It’s GREEN.

What you can do:
Choose to send your $50 to an organisation that has the idea of Offsetting at it’s core. For example www.climatefriendly.com. Keep the money in your pocket, invest in your own renewable energy, and decentralise energy itself. As I have tried to show above, Energex actually has an opportunity right now to be even more profitable. If Energex won’t provide it, provide it yourself. They will be sorry they took their sweet time about it. Although if Energex do wise up, don’t forget that there are actually really good reasons for decentralisation. Lack of control over people is one of them, another is system based. Right now if energex fails the whole thing fails - it is centralised.

Till we have abundant green energy ‘live on less’ still applies.

Catch a Fire the movie

I saw Catch a Fire tonight and just wanted to let you know that I thought it was great. Don’t let the previews put you off. The previews can make it seem a bit heavier than it is.
