map magazine readers survey

You may not know, but I do a bit of work with map magazine on their websites. I consider myself very lucky to have an opportunity to contribute to positive media. I love map magazine and I know that many of you do because we get over 100 copies each month and they all disappear in the first 2 weeks. No other mag or street press moves even close to that fast. So if you have been loving map now is your chance to let them know you care and help them out by participating in the map magazine reader survey 08/09.

I love Organic Cotton

My first Organic Cotton T-Shirt was an Inhabitat.com shirt, which my partner Rachel lovingly brought back from New York. So soft and comfortable. For my birthday today amongst some awesome books I received another Organic Cotton T-Shirt but this time from an Australian company which has some very cool designs. I want one of everything. The picture above is the one I recieved. If you want a soft comfortable shirt that happen to look really good too, then you have to check out www.kindling.com.au

As a side note. If you have smelly feet try cotton socks. I walk in puddles if I wear anything but cotton socks. I have never owned organic cotton socks but swear by natural fibres for my feet. Now I must find some organic socks.

Machuca

Just finished watching a movie called Machuca. It was recommended by Karen as one of the movies that we could be lending out from the shop. In itself the movie was great. I am no movie reviewer so all I can really say is that I think it was really well made. What stuck me about the movie was the theme of hatred. It is not the first movie to depict such racial/political/class/etc hatred but this time I thought I might blog my thoughts on hatred.

Besides Internet Explorer I pretty much don’t feel hatred for anything or anyone these days. I used to feel a lot of hatred though, once upon a time - for people mostly. It made me feel powerful even though I know now it was a power that was born in fear. It was an illusionary power that was week in nature and never prevailed. It did not serve me in the end. So to a degree I can understand it when a person hates, but when a culture hates I can’t identify with that on a personal level.

I guess that I am lucky to have never had hatred for another culture instilled in me although in recent times there have been attempts. And just so my government knows. I don’t buy the scare campaigns. I will decide one by one my trust for another person and should a person do me wrong, I will not condemn a whole culture for it.

So in the movie there is this cultural hatred that escalates into violence and ultimately a military coup. And I think to myself for a minute that I am lucky to live in a country where there may be racism and cultural hated but it is mild and it is kept to oneself mostly. I quickly call myself a ‘Sheltered Wanker’ to start with, because I bet there is plenty of cultural hated out there that is affecting people in real and damaging ways everyday. Either I am fortunate or I don’t see it because I am not contributing to it. Then I remember Detention Centres - I do see it, it is just too easy to forget.

But here is the point I am trying to get at. From good soil good food grows. From poor quality soil that is laden with toxic chemicals things still grow, even things that look pretty much the same as things that grow healthy but they are not healthy. Hitler was a plant growing in a soil that let him be the person he was. And there are many other examples like this one. Is the soil to blame? That is, are the people to blame? I am going to go with Yes. But I say it with empathy. I heard it explained once that Hitler’s ‘emergence’ can be traced back along a chain of events. Unchecked sledging that becomes ok on a day to day level makes small things that should not have been ok, ok. And once the small things seem ok it makes the bigger things seem ok too, and on and on until no one remembers how it started. What kind of soil are we? What kind of leaders will emerge from us? Sorry for the long winded analogy - emergence is the key word. Responsibility belongs to us.

I don’t understand all of the details but someone suggested to me once on this topic that Pauline Hanson was Australia’s test and we passed. Maybe, not sure. You might know better - use the comments. I do like the idea though that for all our superficial cultural hatred, if called on it we would walk the other way.

By the way, in the soil analogy there is usually a farmer…

Donate Blood Reminder

I gave blood this week. Actually I gave plasma. I did that thing where they take you blood out, spin off the plasma leaving behind your read blood cells than they pump the red blood cells back into you. It is a pretty weird concept if you have not done it, but the machine they use is fascinating. Very easy. The trick is finding the time for most of us I think. But hey if you are looking for an excuse to kick up your heals and read a book for an hour give giving blood ago.

And if you are B Negative they need your blood. I think it is so hard to get that they have a goal of obtaining like 1 litre a day. I think from now on I am going to make a post when I give blood to remind others to get on the www.donateblood.com.au website and make an appointment. But you don’t need to make an appointment, you can just walk in off the street and give.

The Space Invaders have arrived.

arcadetable and people

I had fun today! About F’ing time you say? I know, I know! It is true that I can be a bit all work and no play. So to over compensate for this I have hired a classic arcade table for the cafe. I could tell you a story about my childhood regression but I have a better short story about this other guy.

galaga2I had been warming up the machine for about 15mins when this guy sits down across the room, sees the machine and instantly asks “Is that space invaders?… I used to play that when I was 15, now I am 51!” I reply with “Yes, would you like a game on me?” He almost jumps up. We play 2 players in Space Invaders while he introduces me to some SI strategy. He plays really well, moving to the second stage on his first go. It was awesome fun and would have been a great way to meet someone had I remembered to ask him his name. Seriously, there is something cool about sitting down to play Space Invaders with a 50 year old man that is better at it than you.

We have practice tokens so that you can get back in the groove for chasing those high scores but for just $1 a game, you can choose from 48 authentic classics including Frogger, PacMan, Galaxian, Space Invaders, Galaga, Gyruss, Donkey Kong and more.

BRING THE KIDS
Urban Grind is child-friendly and so is the Asobu. Bring your little one/s in for a turn at Ladybug or Junior PacMan – that is, if the grown-ups can tear themselves away!

SCORE A FREE GAME!
Show off your high-score-beating prowess and we’ll shout you another game for FREE!

The arcade table is on a 4-week trial. If you’d like to see it stay, come in and give it a good workout.

We have moved.

It is probably about time that I officially mention that we have moved. Our shop in Paddington is now closed and we have reopened in New Farm at 530 Brunswick St. We greatly miss all of our Paddington friends and hope to cross paths with each of you eventually. It truly was our customers that made Urban Grind Paddington what it was. It has been a wonderful 3+ years of growing, learning and sharing that I know the whole Urban Grind team was sad to see end.

I would like to take the opportunity too to give an extra special shout out to Sophie. I know you all joked about it, but it’s true we would never have made it as far as we did had it not been for Sophie. We love her, we adore her. She stuck with us through everything and never for a moment gave anything less than more than she was asked. She was a friend not an employee and remains one of my best friends. Thank you Sophie… love love. She saw you all as friends too and I promise you that you meant more to her than you can ever imagine. For 3 and a half years you played a part in raising an nurturing this most beautiful soul. I could thank each and all of you for so many things but this one probably means the most to me. Thank you for being so much to Sophie.

Burger Urge LogoSo tell us a bit about New Farm. Technically I think it is actually Fortitude Valley, but we sit right on the border and there is New Farm sign outside. So we went with New Farm. We are actually on the corner of Harcourt St. It’s near Burger Urge, only about 4 or 5 blocks up from the mall. Still can’t place it? Ok, well I gave you a chance… do you know the dodgy Laundromat with the prostitutes? We are virtually next door. I can’t recommend the prostitutes but I can recommend the Burger Urge burgers. Fully wicked! I am addicted to the Portobello Mushrooms and grilled halumi cheese burger. But here are a couple of tips. The sweet potato chips are awesome but if there is only 2 of you get a burger to share if you are having chips too. Also for those that can’t eat a whole burger I believe that you can get all of their burgers without the bread. Colby is a really nice guy and until now it was a secret that I wanted a Cuddly Dora Doll.

What else? Well it is a lovely little building that we are in. They tell me that it is Tudor style. Anyway the best part about the building is our landlords. Clearly God felt really bad about the Paddington thing and thought she would cut us a break this time and send us a couple of landlords that are true gentlemen. These guys see our success and happiness as theirs. I am most grateful to them, for not only are they simply awesome to do business with, if they had not offered us this space there might not be an Urban Grind of any kind right now.

So in short, we look forward to a wonderfully fun future at New Farm. See you soon, I hope

A Liberal Democracy

By now you have hopefully heard of GetUp!, the

(…)independent, grass-roots community advocacy organisation giving everyday Australians opportunities to get involved and hold politicians accountable on important issues.

Whether it is sending an email to a member of parliament, engaging with the media, attending an event or helping to get a television ad on the air, GetUp members take targeted, coordinated and strategic action.

GetUp does not back any particular party, but aims to build an accountable and progressive Parliament - a Parliament with economic fairness, social justice and environment at its core.

GetUp is a not-for-profit and receives no money from any political party or the government. We rely solely on funds and in-kind donations from the Australian public.

They have over 230,000 members and raised $1.14 million in the lead up to the recent election. This effort has been recognised as having a real effect on the election outcome that was. In short GetUp! gave a voice to the Australian public. It put the power back in the hands of the people. And instead of simply having to listen to the 2 party preferred campaigns GetUp! were able to use the money raised to air their own ads. GetUp! spoke for the people while the parties spoke for the parties.

Personally I voted for the Greens and gave preference to Labor. One the reasons I didn’t vote for Liberals is the way they play Democracy as if it were a card trick. Watch this hand while I do something else with the other hand. I know many liberal voters that are the first to defend democracy, but what does it mean when a Liberal senator sees GetUps! power to the people success as “a very regrettable development in Australian politics”(smh - 28.11.07).

If you are truly going to defend democracy then shouldn’t you be greeting with open arms anything that enables or better facilitates it?

There is only one Urban Grind

There is no Urban Grind West End anymore. It has been this way for over 2 years now. Charlton and I are no longer partners, and Urban Grind West End changed it’s name to Ugees a long time ago. Before I go on, I urge you to seek Charlton’s side of the story. I also want you to know that I never wanted to take this public. I always hoped that Charlton and I could just resolve this privately, but it seems that I was wrong.

About 6 years ago I started Urban Grind in West End. After a while I employed Charlton, then after a while longer I gave him a partnership. I appreciated his hard work and sense of ownership that he brought to Urban Grind. We were friends.

It turned out that Charlton and I had very different ideas on where to take Urban Grind, and our directions were not complementary. We came to a point where there was no moving forward together. By this time we had 2 shops between us. Charlton was running the already established West End Urban Grind, and I was running the new shop at Paddington. In dissolving the partnership the simplest option seemed to be to take a shop each and call it even. Due to the differing ideas though, there could not be 2 Urban Grinds. The name of the West End shop would have to change as this was the shop that Charlton was taking. Rachel and I birthed Urban Grind so that name was staying with us. Charlton agreed to this, registered and started trading under Ugees. There was a disagreement over signage though…

Metallica

dire the lightningOk, so they lost me after the black album but Metallica is one of my favourite bands of all time. I have recently been listening to all the old (first 5) albums again and trying to get into the newer ones (no luck). I am Listening to Ride the Lightning now and I must say that it is by far my favourite.

But why the Metallica post? Metallica helped my through my teenage years. When my parents weren’t able to explore with me my feelings and frustrations Metallica was. Looking back I wonder how interesting it would have been for my parents to have listened to Metallica with me and talked with me about the lyrics. I have always been someone the listens quite deeply to lyrics and allow my self to be influenced by them. A lot of Metallica’s older stuff was quite deep. Some of it I could relate to, some of it I contemplated as they were new ideas being introduced to me and some of it I rejected. It gave me strength and often inspiration.

I have also thought that it would be great to study the lyrics of bands like Metallica in poetry class. I hated english at high school - it bored the crap out of me. But my teachers could have had my full attention had they said, “Today for poetry we are going to study Metallica and we are going to start with the lyrics to the song Dyers Eve (lyrics below).” If you read the lyrics below imagine that I am 14 years old always at odds with my parents and tell me that I could not have had a very interesting class discussion about this song. Consider that I was feeling these things and might have also benefited from the opportunity to process these concepts/feelings/ideas.

I have always said that I will listen with my children to the music they choose to listen to. I am nervous about this as I am not a fan of pop stuff. But maybe if I listen to this music with my children they may be able to show me the meaning they get from something that I thought was so shallow. Or maybe I will be able to teach them something. Either way it seems like a good way to engage with your kids and maybe talk about bigger things. I could be wrong, but if my parents were to ask me if there was something they could have done differently this would be my answer. Listen with me to the music that i was deliberately using to create a picture of who I was and who I wanted to be. I always had questions that could have been answered by an adult but instead I had to wait years before I could fully understand some of these things, and it should be noted that I understood a whole lot more than I was being given credit for.

Please do not mistake that last bit for unresolved anger. The human race faces it’s biggest crisis ever and we need to be able to work together, Father and Son, etc to solve it. The older generation is in need of fresh thinking and the younger generation will need the wisdom of those that have come before us. Both will need the humility to be wrong in the face of the other. They will need to be able to communicate. Personally I think that it is the duty of the adults to take responsibility for this interaction.
