The End of the Old School Car Industry.

I have just started reading a very good book by Nic Frances called, The End of Charity. In itself the book is very interesting and Nic sounds like a very cool guy but it was something he said near the begining that got me thinking about this car industry subsidy debate that we are not really having.

How do we create a market for positive change? For a start, we have to price the things we want to achieve according to their value and the cost of not having them. They cannot be priced according to ideology or historic preference. For example, subsidising the cost of electricity generated by brown coal, a major polluter, while not subsidising hydro, solar or wind power or energy efficiency to the same extent forces us to remain polluters and undermines the market’s ability to self-correct.

It is too late in the evening now for me to finish this post with a long winded rant about the rich man smacking you with the ‘market decides’ argument on one hand and asking the government for money on the other hand because the market decide they should fade away.

Anyway, you can check out the book here: The End of Charity and/or thanks to google read the first few chapters here.

map magazine readers survey

You may not know, but I do a bit of work with map magazine on their websites. I consider myself very lucky to have an opportunity to contribute to positive media. I love map magazine and I know that many of you do because we get over 100 copies each month and they all disappear in the first 2 weeks. No other mag or street press moves even close to that fast. So if you have been loving map now is your chance to let them know you care and help them out by participating in the map magazine reader survey 08/09.

I need to do something real.

Ok, so I was only going to post one of these but they are so well done. This is how you get peoples attention. Feeling really bad that I didn’t do the 40 Hour Famine. No doubt though that these ads played on main stream TV at popular time slots (tongue in cheek).

Change to opening hours for Saturdays

Hey all, just a quick note to let you know that we will be closing at 1pm on Saturdays from now on. Um that is all for now unless you want to talk about this.

First Kiva loan paid back.

Just received some great news. One of our first Kiva loans have been paid back in full. How cool is that? You can check out all of the info here. We all made this happen together. Your tips, the staffs volunteering of those tips to Kiva. Give each other a clap. Now I am off to make some more loans. Should be able to make about another 2, but don’t rush to our loans page as it can take about 3 days for the Paypal transaction to go through. So far we have made $125 worth of loans in $25 dollar amounts with one paid back. Thank you everyone. It gives me a real buzz to be able to do this kind of thing.

Crop to Cup

I get asked every now and then about Fair Trade. Urban Grind does not serve certified fair trade coffee. I have various reasons for this but it is too late in the evening to try and explain with this post - ask me sometime. What I do have though is some news from DiBella Coffee on the subject. They are not certified either which we could go into if I wasn’t supposed to be in bed but I will quickly say this “What would the world look like if we had to certify random acts of kindness?”

Anyway if you are interested in reading about what DiBella is doing to connect with and support it’s growers please visit their news page and read Crop to Cup. If you have trouble finding the news post I have posted it here too. Just click on the ‘read more’ link.

Pangea Day 08

pangea day logoToday started at 2:30am for me and my family. Today was World Pangea Day. Which is an event designed to bring the people of the world together by helping us to look at our similarities instead of our differences. Our local event was hosted by map magazine in their office in Newstead. We all started arriving from about 3am onwards for a 4am start. You see the idea was to get as many people as possible around the world watching the same world changing films at the same time. This meant a 4am start for Brisbane.

The show started right on time. It was a seamless effort and for me a very emotional experience that was very hard to pull away from. I was supposed to leave early but couldn’t. I now can’t wait for the next Pangea Day. I strongly urge you to visit the Pangea Day website where you can watch all of the films that were shown during the event and even reply the event which is well worth the 4 hours.

If you do find it inspiring then head to TED.com where it all started. TED is also a great way to keep the conversation going.

Who on earth cares?

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing Australians today. It’s up to all of us – individuals, business and government – to act
quickly and ensure we protect this wonderful country for our kids and their kids too.

Who On Earth Cares brings together Australians from all walks of life who want to want to see Australia reduce its spiralling levels of greenhouse pollution and avoid dangerous climate change. Who On Earth Cares shows what we are all doing in our lives to save energy and helps each of us let our politicians know we want leadership and real solutions to this important issue.

Each of us really can make a difference, but together we can do even more. Put yourself on the map today at www.whoonearthcares.com to show you care about climate change.

The above are not my words, but the words supplied by the campaign itself. I think they would have said it better than me though. The only thing I would add is that I think this is a nice visual idea. I like visual ideas to represent information.

A mantra for 2008

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” - Buckminster Fuller
