Changed opening hours

Hello all. Just a quick note to let you know that we are now opening from 8am on Sundays for Summer, but on the flip side we will be closing early at Midday on both Saturday and Sunday till the end of Summer too. Also did you know that we have Fruit Toast now, a wicked Chai Tea and Iced Coffee made from fresh espresso. Now you do. Thanks

map magazine readers survey

You may not know, but I do a bit of work with map magazine on their websites. I consider myself very lucky to have an opportunity to contribute to positive media. I love map magazine and I know that many of you do because we get over 100 copies each month and they all disappear in the first 2 weeks. No other mag or street press moves even close to that fast. So if you have been loving map now is your chance to let them know you care and help them out by participating in the map magazine reader survey 08/09.

Help us Win

Last year Urban Grind was runner up to The 3 Monkeys for best coffee in Brisbane. This year we need your help to make sure that doesn’t happen again. It’s not that I don’t love The 3 Monkeys but I would rather we won that category. So if you do love your Urban Grind coffee please be kind enough to support us buy voting in the map village 2008/2009 Eat/Drink ‘best place’ awards.

We are actually nominated in 4 categories. Look for categories numbered 4, 7, 10 & 20. I guess we don’t have to win them all but it would be nice. Oh, and by entering you stand the chance to win something too. Click here to start voting now! Thanks heaps! Morgs.

PARK(ing) Day Brisbane 2008

This Friday the 19th of September is International PARK(ing) Day. And this year in Brisbane it is going to be big. You can find all of the details, including park locations on the Brisbane PARK(ing) Day Website. Last year we kicked it off in Brisbane but Yen has taken it so much further this year than I ever dreamed. Brisbane is on it’s way to being one of the biggest PARK(ing) Day cities in the world. So if you see a PARK stop and check it out - try it out. And if you get a chance tell Yen how wonderful she is by leaving a comment on her weblog. This would not have been possible without her. You rock Yen!

Drawing with Coffee For Sophie

YouTube Preview Image

Sophie once drew Rach an awesome angel on a white take away bag using coffee. I think we still have it somewhere. The fact that she could do that was one of the things we loved about Sophie.

The Space Invaders have arrived.

arcadetable and people

I had fun today! About F’ing time you say? I know, I know! It is true that I can be a bit all work and no play. So to over compensate for this I have hired a classic arcade table for the cafe. I could tell you a story about my childhood regression but I have a better short story about this other guy.

galaga2I had been warming up the machine for about 15mins when this guy sits down across the room, sees the machine and instantly asks “Is that space invaders?… I used to play that when I was 15, now I am 51!” I reply with “Yes, would you like a game on me?” He almost jumps up. We play 2 players in Space Invaders while he introduces me to some SI strategy. He plays really well, moving to the second stage on his first go. It was awesome fun and would have been a great way to meet someone had I remembered to ask him his name. Seriously, there is something cool about sitting down to play Space Invaders with a 50 year old man that is better at it than you.

We have practice tokens so that you can get back in the groove for chasing those high scores but for just $1 a game, you can choose from 48 authentic classics including Frogger, PacMan, Galaxian, Space Invaders, Galaga, Gyruss, Donkey Kong and more.

BRING THE KIDS
Urban Grind is child-friendly and so is the Asobu. Bring your little one/s in for a turn at Ladybug or Junior PacMan – that is, if the grown-ups can tear themselves away!

SCORE A FREE GAME!
Show off your high-score-beating prowess and we’ll shout you another game for FREE!

The arcade table is on a 4-week trial. If you’d like to see it stay, come in and give it a good workout.

Buy jewellery direct from the makers!

Buy jewellery direct from the makers!

I don’t know the other names but they are probably really good too if they are kicking around with Mark Vaarwerk. I think his Jewellery is great. He has even used our discarded milk bottles from Urban Grind in some of his pieces. It was very cool of Mark to take our bottles and re-purpose them.

BAD - Designer Fight Club

BAD - Designer Fight ClubThis should make for a great local event. As I understand it, the idea is to sit down 12 designers, present them with a concept and give them 10 mins or so to come up with a visual design. The best designers move to the next round until there is only one standing. This Thursday the students get to put the gloves on and next month the pros do it. Should be an interesting show. Urban Grind has provided free coffee cards (Davros designed them) for the event as door prizes. Speaking of prizes, there are some wicked ones up for grabs with the major prize being a fully spec’d iMac.

And by Urban Grind we mean…

Often we have joked that Urban Grind is something you escape from as opposed to escape to for a coffee. Turns out that Australia is the 3rd largest Urban Grinders in the world, behind the US and Japan. I have also read that this does not make us among the most productive. In fact I think the case is that countries that work more always produce less. Can’t remember where I read that but if you consider how much you achieve when you are run down, wouldn’t you be better recharging your batteries? Something I am going to try and do more of this year.

So on average Australia works 1870 hours per year. I know I work more than that. And 1870 per year actually looks really attractive. So for those working too much I am not sure what we do about it, but boy it got my little head thinking when the average is considered high and I am above average. I don’t want to be above average. Anyway food for thought, next time you are relaxing over a coffee.

Some Urban Grind Demographics Facebook Style

So Urban Grind has a Facebook page, we have have nearly 100 fans too, which is cool. I have just been playing with the page and stumbled across some demographic stats which might be of interest. Was to me.
