Coffees for Mobile Phones

Mobile Muster BoxFor a while now Urban Grind has had a Mobile Muster Box. It is great because you can not only throw in your old mobile phones to be recycled but you can also throw in all of those accessories you you never use.

I try to think of Urban Grind as a community hub which is why I requested one of these boxes. You can find them at places like Cartridge World but a lot of the places you find them are once in a while places. The places that every time you go in and see the box you smack yourself in the head for forgetting that old mobile phone again. But Urban Grind is different, most people are there day after day (God love em!) so it only takes a couple of forgetful moments before the phones start rolling in.

To help those who are extra forgetful, Urban Grind will see Mobile Musters tree and give you a free coffee for turning in your old mobile phone. If you want to learn more about Mobile Muster please read on.

Recycle you old mobile before June 5th and MobileMuster will plant a native tree for you, for free! To celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th Urban Grind has joined MobileMuster to help round up and recycle old mobile phones in our workplace and at the same time do some good for the environment.

MobileMuster, in partnership with Landcare Australia, will plant a native tree for every mobile phone handset we collect and send into MobileMuster for recycling by June 9th.

MobileMuster recovers over 90% of the plastics and metals in a mobile phone helping to avoid greenhouse gas emissions and save natural resources.
Did you know that:

  • 7 out of 10 people have at least one old unused mobile phone at home and an estimated 16 million mobile phones are sitting around in cupboards and drawers
  • Mobile phones are not biodegradable and contain small amounts of substances such as cadmium in NiCad batteries which if not managed properly can be harm the environment
  • By recycling mobile phones, more than 90% of the mobile phone product materials can be extracted and reused such as plastics, gold, silver, copper and nickel.
  • One tonne of mobile phone circuits can yield the same amount of precious metals as 110 tonnes of gold ore, 123 tonnes of silver bearing ore and 11 tonnes of copper sulphide ore.

What/Where do I recycle?
Simply bring in your old mobile phone handsets, batteries, chargers and accessories and place them in the (insert details of collection points). It’s that easy!

What happens to them?
All mobiles collected by MobileMuster are dismantled, sorted and separated into circuit boards, batteries, plastics and metals. These are then processed either locally or overseas for resource recovery.

How will MobileMuster plant a tree for me?

MobileMuster with the assistance of Landcare groups across Australia will plant a native tree for every mobile phone handset it receives during the campaign. Trees will be planted where they will deliver long-term environmental benefits such as restoring biodiversity; protecting the habitat of Australia’s endangered wildlife; reducing soil salinity and erosion and improving water quality.

MobileMuster has partnered with Landcare Australia to plant and maintain the trees. Only native species will be planted. The aim is to plant 100,000 trees. To do this, MobileMuster really needs your support.

Every mobile phone counts – thank you for recycling your old mobiles to celebrate World Environment Day.
